In this project, I was tasked with Vellum simulation, tool-building, and helping build out pipeline to incorporate Houdini into The Collected Work’s workflow. The project was for Dropbox, for a video introducing their website redesign.
Some of the challenges included adapting to their Windows-based pipeline whereas most of my prior experience was around Linux-based pipelines. We managed to find a solution that allowed us to coordinate shots on their file sharing system.
On the Houdini side, various utility HDAs needed to be created to easily place and orient assets and ensure colors were accurate to official branding guidelines.
The most complex tools were related to Vellum. I designed a procedural system to create vellum constraints from our imported Illustrator assets. Seams were created based on curvature to give a wrinkled appearance to certain edges on the inflated balloons.
